A Boutique Affair

It's hard to make friends in your 20's
It's even harder to make them in your 30's
At this point, I'm really dreading the thought
Of making it, to my 40's
Once you've reached that point of over the hill
Are you making friends
Or padding out numbers for your funeral?
At this stage mine's gonna be an exclusive event
The grudges that you hold through your 20's
Are gonna be harder to break in your 30's
And I can't imagine why we'd even bother in our 40's
Once a holes been that deeply dug
Does it make sense just to cover it up
And move on leave, regrets
To gather dust?
A boutique affair is what they'll call it (Is what they'll call it)
A boutique affair for 'what's his name'? (For what's his name?)
He threw a party back in high school (back in high school)
But if I try just can't put a face to the name (didn't we)
Didn't we do this all instinctively?
When we were kids out on the street
And we'd meet up with other kids
Who shared similar interests?
There were no empty words
No doublespeak,
No saying yes,
When it's 'no' you mean,
Or maybe
As long as there's no one around to see.
A boutique affair is what they'll call it (is what they'll call it)
A boutique affair for 'what's his name'? (For what's his name?)
He threw a party back in high school (back in high school)
But if I try just can't put a face to the name
A boutique affair is what they'll call it (is what they'll call it)
A boutique affair for 'what's his name'? (For what's his name?)
He threw a party back in high school (back in high school)
But if I try just can't put a face to the name, or a name to the face

Song of the Renter
04:16

Dawn breaks as underneath our feet
The cracklin' ground
Of Autumn leaves tells us
Another winter's comin' round
And as the last traces of light
Disappear beneath the clouds
You can hear the city's heartbeat
As it quickens with the bounce
And in the streets
To the North
The hipsters
Are trawling alleyways
Trying to find the next hip spot
Before it becomes passe
And in the laneways
To the South
The once cool
Drown their sorrows away
As they ponder
Into their craft brew
When their life
Became so safe?
So safe?
So they sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
They sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
Driving west at night
The cranes look like
Aliens in formation
All biding their time
In single file
Before they start
Their invasion
And with blueprints
And permits in hand
In the name of gentrification
Under their reign
We'll never own a piece of land
Once they complete
Their transformation
And in the streets
To the North
The hipsters
Are trawling alleyways
Trying to find the next hip spot
Before it becomes passe
And in the laneways
To the South
The once cool
Drown their sorrows away
As they ponder
Into their craft brew
When their life
Became so safe?
So safe?
So they sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
They sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
They sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
They sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
As a child in the South East
I'd stop and stare
At the lights
In the distance
They looked like a galaxy
And felt as far away
And in the streets
To the North
Hipsters, trawling alleyways
Trying to find the next hip spot
Before it becomes passe
And in the laneways
To the South
The once cool
Drown their sorrows away
As they ponder
Into their craft brews
When their life
Became so safe?
So safe?
And so we sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing the song,
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing, the song
The 'Song of the Renter'
We sing

Life in Three Part Harmony
Lights go down,
Shadows, take the stage.
The room waits...
As the first notes played,
Adrenaline pulsates,
And a thousand strangers,
Become friends,
As they realise, what song it is.
And I’m watching you, watching them
As your face lights up, with every inflection
And as you sing along to every word,
Your heart beats, to their rhythm,
And you’ve never looked so beautiful,
Music is the dialect of your soul
Spirits rise, walls fall
Between young and old,
Every major or minor chord played
and word sung,
A communal state, a temporary escape
As all walks of life, become one.
And looking at you, is like looking at my reflection
And I’m watching you, watching them
As your face lights up, with every inflection
And as you sing along to every word,
Your heart beats, to their rhythm,
And you’ve never looked so beautiful,
Music is the dialect of your soul
And when I get home you’ll go to sleep in my old band T-shirt
The one I bought when I was fifteen and angry at the world
And I never thought I’d find someone who understood,
But we’ve got these memories that say that I could,
And I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I’d rather be,
Than in the front row, of a sold out show, in your company,
Singing back to the sounds of the songs that saved me,
My life’s perfect, perfect, perfect, three part harmony
And I’m watching you, watching them
As your face lights up, with every inflection
And as you sing along to every word,
Your heart beats, to their rhythm,
And you’ve never looked so beautiful,
Music is the dialect of your soul x 2
And I’m watching you, watching them.
(Music is the dialect of your soul)
As your face lights up with every inflection
(Music is the dialect of your soul)
And I’m watching you, watching them.

The Awful Truth
04:14
|
|
||
Entrusted to watch the flock
You took advantage of the post
Betrayed the youngest ones
A real wolf in shepherds clothes
Instead of guiding towards the light
You used that twisted vile mind
To manipulate and take
You're scarring them for life.
Well is it getting hot,
Under that collar?
Well is it getting hot?
Pray tell me, father?
Now that your cover's blown
You've been exposed, the awful truth
Acts so evil that
Your own god wont help you
Is it getting hot under collar?
Well it's hotter where you're going
So settle in, and come to grips
With your uncomfortable death
The snake hidden among the pews
With such a savage toxic bite
Size up the prey as you pontificate
About the promise of the afterlife
Well dear god, I hope there's a heaven
So they see your wretched face
As the gates slam shut
Condemning you
A prisoner of your own faith
Well is it getting hot
Under that collar?
Well is it getting hot?
Pray tell me, father?
Now that your cover's blown
You've been exposed, the awful truth
Acts so evil that your
Own god wont help you
Is it getting hot under collar?
Well it's hotter where you're going
So settle in, and come to grips
With your uncomfortable death
For no punishment on this green earth
Can make up for the harm you've done
So I hope you spend your days tremblin'
I can't wait to watch you burn
No punishment on this green earth
Can make up for the harm you've done
So I hope you spend your days tremblin'
I can't wait to watch you burn
Now that your cover's blown
You've been exposed the awful truth
Acts so evil that your own god won't help you
Is it getting hot under collar?
Well it's hotter where you're going
So settle in and come to grips
With your uncomfortable...
Now that your cover's blown
You've been exposed, the awful truth
Acts so evil that your own god won't help you
Is it getting hot under collar?
Well it's hotter where you're going
So settle in, and come to grips
With your uncomfortable death

Nothing...
03:54
|
|
||
Walk in the room.
And take my seat,
Look to the left,
Find nothing where your face should be.
It’s been years since you left,
But I can’t seem to make my mind,
Comprehend,
So I keep, seeking your advice
And I remember that night,
As lightning cracked over the sky
You said don't be afraid
Now you've gone,
I’ve lost my place,
Keep trying to put on a brave face,
but my soul's lost polarity
(my soul's lost polarity)
Do you remember the time, we talked for hours?
All about those, those years of service,
You tried to deflect when a name would catch your breath,
But even your sharp wit couldn’t cover up the torment
I remember that night,
As lightning cracked over the sky
You said don't be afraid
Now you've gone,
I’ve lost my place
Keep trying to put on a brave face,
but my soul's lost polarity
And no matter how I search,
can’t find my sense of purpose,
so tell me please,
How to find my centre on earth?
I remember that night, as lighting cracked over the sky
You said don’t be afraid, (tell me how) x2
I remember that night, as lighting cracked over the sky
You said don’t be afraid (tell me how)
(Now you’ve gone I’ve lost my place, keep trying to put on a brave face, but my soul's lost polarity) x4
I remember that night,
As I watched you slowly die,
I said don't be afraid.
